Is social media a fad, or the biggest shift since the industrial revolution?

It's hard to really state that social media is just a fad, or the biggest shift. The reason is because it is both. Everything starts somewhere, and being a fad is where I feel social media began. People started using it because they thought it was a cool and handy thing to use. They used it because other people they knew were using it. People were expected to be using it. This eventually spread and social media became popular.

From there, companies started to realize the potential that social media could bring to their company. Ordinary people discovered that they could make a career out of these sites they were already using. Social media evolved from something people only used for fun, into a that tool people could use to build a career out of, or even assist their company in furthering the quality of their business. Whether it be from receiving revenue from advertisements, or from connecting with your customers and interacting with them, allowing information to be gathered to improve a company's overall product and/or service. Social media gives them a connection with other people that they didn't have before: a direct link where the company, celebrity or whoever else it cold be, can speak directly to another person, whether it be a fan, consumer, or someone else, using social media as a catalyst.

This is an important step in society today, and I feel that in the coming years this will continue to grow and become an even larger part in our daily lives. We already feel the need to want to share life moments, pictures, websites we found online, documentations of our daily lives, with other people through the internet, and as more possibilities become available, the more this will happen allowing further opportunities to be made.

  1. I liked the idea’s in your blog posting Jon and think it's well written. I agree with your point of social media continuing to grow in the future. I joined Facebook because most of my friends were using it so I found your introduction to be very true and i also think social media is a great opportunity for businesses to recruit or advertize.

  2. Jon, I agree with you that its hard to say whether social media is a fad or shift. Yes, businesses are growing out of social media but only time will tell whether it will make as big an impact on the world as the Industrial Revolution.

  3. I would have to lean on the side of Social Media being a big shift rather than a fad. Humans are very social and love to communicate with eachother. Everything that has made it easier to do so had been a huge development. For example: Newspapers,Phones,Email, the Internet in general, and now sites like Facebook, Youtube and Twitter.

  4. It is both, you are correct. It is a fad among adolescence and the biggest shift in the economy for everyone else. It was created to make life easier for all and I completely agree with your statements.

  5. Completely agree here. I know realize that I probably should have said this when I wrote down what I was trying to say. Should not have picked a side. But you are completely right, its like they said in the movie the Social Network .. they couldnt post ads for "The Facebook" because it was at the time just so cool. But now it is an everyday thing that we use on a regular basis. Fads are fads so that they can possibly someday become the biggest shift since industrial revolution.
